Fashion Masters student Susan Sewell's practice-led research aims to embody fashion, luxury and the fairytale in creating objects of magical quality imbued with meaning, particularly fashion's object of desire - the luxury handbag. Using the fairytale as a starting point for design inspiration, Susan's practice explores concepts, materials and manufacturing processes used to create the one-off items.

Susan Sewell has 13 years professional industry experience as an Art Director, Graphic Designer and Illustrator working (predominantly freelance) within Advertising, Design and Publishing studios.

Currently working with international fashion label Easton Pearson and as a sessional fashion lecturer at QUT, Jane Morley talks about her journey through the fashion industry since she started out in 2004. Jane has worked in many and varies roles in that time, including assistant designer, product developer and production manager.

Ever wondered what watercolour was all about? Mia Clark will present a talk and demonstration as an introduction to the watercolour medium. Topics include the basics of using watercolour and different techniques and styles. Mia is a qualified art teacher specialising in portraiture and figurative work in every medium, and is currently teaching watercolour at Brisbane Institute of Art. This talk is presented in conjunction with Eugene Carchesio Explores the Collection, an exhibition that features a wide range of watercolours from farming scenes to contemporary abstracts.

Newly published author Zacharey Jane talks about the odds of being discovered and published from the 'slush pile'. Her novel 'The Lifeboat', fell into her head onboard a ferry leaving Mexico, removing 30 years of writer's block, and was published by UQP.

Zacharey will discuss finding a style that voices her thoughts originally, reflecting the way the stories evolve in her head, and the process of being edited and published, as a first time writer.

The session will open with a short book reading from The Lifeboat by the author.

Dr Wendy Ella Wright will discuss Frank Lloyd Wright's Japanese art collection and the influence it had on his architectural visions. Not only an architect, Lloyd Wright collected thousands of woodblock prints, ceramics, lacquer ware, gold leaf screens and Buddhist icons. He once wrote, "If Japanese prints were to be deducted from my education, I don't know what direction the whole might have taken." In conjunction with Japan Week.

QUT's first ever fabric-only Swap event is an opportunity to trade quality textiles at a specialist fabric exchange run in conjunction with this year's Mercedes-Benz Brisbane Fashion Festival.

High quality fabric must be clean, folded or rolled with the length clearly tagged. Exchange your fabric for buttons, (max. 25 buttons/person), then use them to 'purchase' lengths of other donated fabrics. One button = 1 metre of fabric.

Tickets for FabricSwap are $6.50 through QTIX, with proceeds donated to Youngcare.
