why study dance teaching by external study?

Convenience

QUT Creative Industries recognises that it is often impossible for people in the field to undertake education and training programs that require attendance at lectures and seminars. Working hours, remoteness from an educational institution and a lack of relevant dance teaching courses are often cited as problems. These courses are offered by external study-attendance at the University is not required except for the intensive residential units, which are elective units in the certificate and graduate certificate courses.

Flexibility

The following study options are available:

  • short intensive courses for busy dancers and teachers
  • professional courses for all dance teachers
  • postgraduate courses for dance teachers with an undergraduate degree and/or significant experience.

These study options cater for teachers from varied teaching backgrounds with a range of experience, skills and needs. The courses are structured to fit within the demands of work and personal commitments. Students work through the study materials at their own pace within a designated semester time frame. With our trimester structure it is possible to complete courses faster or over an entire year. Students can enrol in one, two, three or four units each semester. Online facilities allow you to access resources and communicate with staff and other students at a time that suits you. This flexibility lets you maintain your professional and family responsibilities.

Practical

Assignments and relevant topics can be applied to your current teaching practice. Study tasks and assignments provide opportunities for you to investigate theory and best practice relevant to your teaching situation. Assignments often require reflection upon your current approaches to dance teaching, the consideration of alternatives and the evaluation of new approaches.

Course materials

Comprehensive study materials include all the resources needed to undertake each unit. Study materials consist of a written study guide and an extensive set of readings. Some units also include an additional video or compact disc resource. Independent activities such as research on teaching and reflecting on professional practice are included where applicable in selected units.

Learning support

During the course, lecturers are available by phone, fax or email to discuss any aspects of your study and assignments. To support you in your study you will be provided with written feedback on assigned tasks.

Building communities

External students experience the freedom to organise their study around other aspects of their lifestyle without the need to attend classes at set times. Our students form a diverse group - with teachers of all age groups and experience levels teaching many dance styles.

Intensive residency weeks and online support tools assist the building of our student network of dance colleagues. These activities will provide you with invaluable opportunities to network, share, inspire and be inspired by dance teachers from diverse backgrounds.

Being a part of the online community of external students is a powerful communication tool. The World Wide Web and email enable you to contact other students in the course to discuss the issues raised in the readings and study guide activities, and other general dance teaching topics. It will also enable you to search web sites relevant to your area of interest.

Teaching Staff

Course materials include contributions from industry professionals such as Tony Geeves, author of the Safe Dance Report 1 and 2, and Julie Chenery, former Executive Officer, Ausdance (Queensland).
